Our Story & Mission
Discover the history, leadership, and vision driving the Somali Medical Students Association forward.
Our History & Impact
The Somali Medical Students Association (SOMSA) is a student led organization founded in 2015 by healthcare students from Mogadishu University, Benadir University, University of Somalia (UNISO), and SIMAD University.
SOMSA was created with a simple but important goal: to unite Somali health students under one platform where they can learn, collaborate, support one another, and contribute to the future of healthcare in Somalia.
What started as a small initiative between students has grown into a wider community connecting students and young healthcare professionals across universities, regions, and the Somali diaspora. SOMSA welcomes students from all health related fields, including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, public health, laboratory sciences, and other allied health professions.
The organization was founded in response to the need for stronger collaboration, mentorship, and academic support among Somali health students. Many students had limited access to research opportunities, professional networks, and global engagement. SOMSA works to bridge those gaps by creating opportunities that help students grow academically, professionally, and personally.
Through mentorship programs, research support, exam preparation initiatives, community health activities, scholarship opportunities, and diaspora networking, SOMSA helps students build the skills and connections needed to become future healthcare leaders. The association also promotes teamwork, leadership, volunteerism, and knowledge sharing among Somali students both inside and outside the country.
SOMSA believes that empowering students today is an investment in Somalia’s healthcare future. By building a united and globally connected student community, the organization aims to contribute to stronger healthcare systems and better public health outcomes for future generations.
